In a significant move to support Sri Lanka’s transition toward green energy and reduce environmental pollution, China has announced a donation of 100 luxury electric buses to the island nation. The announcement was made by the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhenhong, during his visit to Kandy yesterday (22).
The Ambassador conveyed this message while calling on the Chief Prelates of the Malwathu and Asgiri Chapters to receive their blessings. During the meeting with the Chief Prelate of the Malwathu Chapter, Most Ven. Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thero, and the Chief Prelate of the Asgiri Chapter, Most Ven. Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thero, the Ambassador noted that each bus is valued at approximately US$ 225,000.
"These buses are intended for operation in Kandy, Galle, and Colombo," the Ambassador stated. "China is dedicated to providing maximum support to increase the usage of electric vehicles in Sri Lanka. Currently, electric vehicles are the most widely used form of transport in China."
Beyond the transport sector, the Ambassador assured that China would offer full cooperation to help revive Sri Lanka’s economy, which has been impacted by the recent "Ditva" cyclone. He emphasized that China works with the current Sri Lankan government with great understanding and mutual cooperation, standing by the nation during any crisis.
Addressing infrastructure concerns, the Ambassador mentioned that the Sri Lankan government had requested assistance to reconstruct bridges and highways damaged by adverse weather in the Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, and Badulla districts.
"A team of six experts has already arrived in Sri Lanka to investigate and manage this," Ambassador Qi explained. "We have learned that the majority of roads and bridges in these districts are currently undergoing or need reconstruction. This team is travelling across the island to observe the damaged infrastructure. China is ready to provide the necessary support to carry out these renovations effectively using modern technology, leveraging our global leadership in highway construction expertise."
The Ambassador also highlighted China's ongoing contributions to Sri Lanka's education sector. He noted that China provides the white fabric required for school uniforms annually, having donated 15 million meters of cloth this year alone. Furthermore, 900 smart classrooms have been provided to 500 schools.
"We will continue to provide significant support to uplift education in Sri Lanka," he added, reaffirming China's commitment to supporting the island's highway system, economy, and business sectors.
