A large stock of illegally imported cigarettes was seized during a joint raid carried out yesterday, based on information received by military intelligence.
The operation, conducted by officers of the Rajagiriya Police Special Task Force, led to the arrest of a 47-year-old suspect at a residence in the Wellampitiya area. Authorities recovered 165,200 “Manchester” brand cigarettes, with an estimated market value of Rs. 16.52 million.
Police said the cigarettes had been illegally brought into the country. Further investigations are being conducted by the Wellampitiya Police Station.
