Health authorities have called on parents and caregivers to be extra cautious as a noticeable increase in viral illnesses is being reported among children across the Gampaha District.

Gampaha Hospital Senior Medical Officer Dr. Ravinda Udagamage said young children, particularly those of preschool age, are the most vulnerable to the seasonal surge in viral infections.

Addressing a media briefing, he explained that the current cold and dry weather has contributed to the faster spread of illnesses affecting the upper respiratory tract.

“Children are more susceptible to these viruses as their immunity levels are lower. Therefore, parents must pay close attention to any early symptoms and seek treatment without delay,” Dr. Udagamage said.

He noted that common warning signs include fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, severe headache, muscle pain, vomiting and diarrhoea.

The doctor emphasized that medical advice should be sought immediately if symptoms continue for more than three days or if breathing difficulties develop.

Dr. Udagamage further advised parents to ensure children maintain proper hygiene habits, drink plenty of fluids and avoid crowded places where possible.

Health officials say increased awareness and timely medical care are essential to prevent complications during the current period of heightened viral activity.
