Deputy Minister of Urban Development Eranga Gunasekara announced that 31,000 new houses will be constructed across the country by 2026 as part of the government’s national housing development program.
He made this statement after handing over three newly constructed houses in the Kolonnawa Electoral Division yesterday (January 15). The houses were built under financial provisions of the Housing Development Authority and handed over to beneficiary families.
The Deputy Minister said the housing project is being implemented under the theme “Housing for All – Clean Sri Lanka” and will be carried out islandwide at Divisional Secretariat level. Under the program, financial assistance of Rs. 1 million is provided to low-income families who lack the means to build their own homes.
“The aim of this initiative is to ensure that every citizen has the opportunity to live with dignity in their own home. Apartment complexes for urban residents and new housing schemes for low-income families are being launched to achieve this goal,” he said.
Gunasekara emphasized that the project is carried out with transparent financial management and the participation of beneficiaries, local residents and government officials.
He added that the government is committed to fulfilling its policy of creating “A Rich Country – A Beautiful Life” by meeting the basic needs of the people through sustainable and productive development programs.
