Sri Lanka yesterday officially launched a major Education Digitalization Program aimed at modernizing the country’s school system through advanced technology and digital infrastructure.
The program, funded under a Chinese government grant, was ceremonially launched on January 14 at the Isurupaya Ministry of Education premises. The agreement to commence the initiative was signed by Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, Mr. Nalaka Kaluwewa, and Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka H.E. Qi Zhenhong.
The project is designed to go beyond the simple installation of technological equipment in classrooms. It seeks to introduce a comprehensive and secure online education model that ensures both improved learning opportunities and the safety of schoolchildren.
Key components of the program include the establishment of a cloud data center to support digital education infrastructure, the introduction of distance learning methodologies, and the creation of nearly 900 smart classrooms equipped with artificial intelligence-based operational features.
Officials from the Chinese Embassy, representatives of several Chinese technology companies, and senior officials from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Digital Economy attended the launch event, marking a significant step toward transforming Sri Lanka’s education sector.
