Sri Lankans will not face any changes to electricity tariffs in the first quarter of 2026, the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) announced, citing the failure of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to submit a timely and valid tariff revision proposal.
The Commission had requested the CEB to submit its proposal for January–March 2026 by November 14, 2025. However, the CEB submitted the proposal late, on December 29, 2025, and the draft contained errors. PUCSL asked for a corrected submission by January 8, 2026, but the CEB reported further delays. As a result, the Commission has decided that any revision for the first quarter, even if submitted now, would only cover a short period, potentially causing disproportionately high tariff changes and adversely affecting the national economy.
PUCSL emphasized that a tariff revision can still be implemented for the remaining period of the first quarter after review and public consultation. Meanwhile, the CEB has been directed to submit the proposal for the second quarter of 2026 by February 13, 2026.
