The Gampaha Permanent Three-Judge High Court Bench has decided to postpone the delivery of its verdict in the murder case of former Member of Parliament Amarakeerthi Athukorala until February 11.

Former MP Athukorala was shot dead during an incident that occurred in the Nittambuwa area on May 9, 2022, amid the public unrest that took place at the time. His personal security officer was also killed in the same incident.

Following the shootings, several suspects were arrested, and the Attorney General subsequently filed indictments against 42 defendants before the Gampaha High Court in connection with the murders.

On July 28, 2023, 37 suspects who had been remanded in custody were released on bail, subject to strict bail conditions.

Thereafter, the Supreme Court, on February 12, 2024, issued an order to hear an appeal filed by the Attorney General seeking to nullify the decision of the three-judge Gampaha High Court bench to grant bail to the defendants.
