A 28-year-old man was shot dead by police in the Welikanda area of Polonnaruwa after allegedly attempting to attack officers with a sharp weapon, police said.
According to the Police, the incident occurred when three suspects traveling on a motorcycle failed to stop at a police roadblock. The suspects reportedly fled the scene and later entered a nearby residence in the Welikanda area.
Police said that when officers moved to arrest the suspects, they were obstructed in the performance of their duties. During the confrontation, one suspect allegedly attempted to attack police officers with a sharp weapon, prompting officers to open fire. The suspect sustained fatal gunshot injuries.
The deceased was identified as a 28-year-old male. The remaining suspects managed to escape, and police have launched a search operation to apprehend them.
