Minister Bimal Ratnayake said repair work on key sections of the Northern Railway Line began within 45 days of Cyclone Ditva, demonstrating the government’s commitment to restoring transport links quickly.
He noted that work is already underway on the Mahawa, Omantha, Medawachchiya and Mannar sections. Five bridges and a special tunnel for the safe movement of wild elephants are also being constructed with assistance from India.
The Minister said Mahawa Junction remains a historically important hub in Sri Lanka’s railway network and plays a key role in connecting different parts of the country.
