The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) says the country recorded the highest amount of emigrant remittances in the 40-year history of foreign employment in 2025.
According to the Bureau, Sri Lanka received US$ 8.07 billion (US$ 8,076 million) in remittances from migrant workers between January and December last year. This amounts to approximately Rs. 2,432 billion, reflecting a significant growth of 22.8 percent compared to 2024.
In 2024, emigrant remittances stood at US$ 6.58 billion (US$ 6,575 million).
The SLBFE also noted that the highest-ever monthly remittance inflow was recorded in December 2025, amounting to US$ 879.1 million.
Meanwhile, in line with a policy decision taken by the current government to promote the deployment of skilled workers overseas, the Bureau implemented several measures to ensure quality foreign employment. As a result, more than 310,000 Sri Lankans left the country for overseas employment during the year.
