The Department of Meteorology says the depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal, currently affecting the island’s weather, is expected to weaken into a low-pressure area by tomorrow, with its impact gradually decreasing thereafter.
The system was located about 20 kilometres east of Mullaittivu at 11.30 a.m. today and is likely to cross the Mullaittivu coast around this evening.
Showers are expected in the Northern, North-Central, Uva and Eastern Provinces, while intermittent showers may also occur in the North-Western and Central Provinces. Meanwhile, several other areas may experience showers or thundershowers during the evening or night.
Fairly strong winds of up to 40 kmph are likely at times in the Northern and North-Western Provinces and in the Matale, Trincomalee and Nuwara Eliya districts.
The public has been advised to take necessary precautions to minimise damage from temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
