Under the Government’s digitalisation programme, the Ministry of Digital Economy is to introduce a new electronic card payment system for buses operating in the Uva Province.
A special awareness programme was held yesterday to educate bus owners and bank agents on the implementation of ticket payments through bank cards. Officials explained the operational procedures, benefits and technical aspects of the new system, which is aimed at modernising public transport services and improving convenience for commuters.
During the programme, bus owners and representatives of participating banks expressed their agreement to adopt the electronic payment facility. It was decided that the system will be implemented within the next few months, following the completion of necessary technical arrangements and training.
The initiative is expected to enhance transparency, reduce cash handling, and support the Government’s broader efforts to strengthen the digital economy.
