International Living magazine has ranked Sri Lanka as the most affordable place to live or retire in 2026, according to its latest Global Retirement Index.
The annual index evaluates destinations based on cost of living, climate, healthcare, visa options, and overall lifestyle. Sri Lanka secured the top position due to its low local transportation costs and easy-to-obtain retirement visas.
The magazine noted that a couple can live comfortably in Sri Lanka on around $1,000 per month, while a more luxurious lifestyle is possible for about $2,200 a month.
Vietnam ranked second on the list, with the average cost of living in Hanoi remaining under $1,800 per month. Affordable rent and reasonably priced healthcare were key factors in its high ranking.
Thailand placed third, with cities such as Chiang Mai and coastal towns like Hua Hin offering comfortable living for around $2,000 per month. The country was praised for its affordable housing, accessible services, and reliable transportation.
In fourth place was Bali, Indonesia, where beachside villas can be rented for under $900 per month. The overall cost of living can be as low as $1,400 per month, with access to quality healthcare.
Malaysia completed the top five, particularly the city of Penang, which offers affordable apartments, low utility costs, and reliable public transport and healthcare. A couple can live comfortably there for around $2,500 per month.
Jennifer Stevens, Executive Editor of International Living, said these destinations offer exceptional value for retirees.
“These countries represent the best value for money we’ve found anywhere in the world today. They offer a lower cost of living without sacrificing quality of life,” she said.
The rankings highlight Asia as a leading region for retirees seeking comfort, adventure, and financial peace of mind in 2026.
