The main suspect in the incident in which six people died after consuming illegal alcohol has been arrested by the Wennappuwa Police.
Police said the suspect is a 47-year-old resident of the Bandiripuwa area in Galawatta East. He was taken into custody as investigations continue into the fatal incident reported on the 6th.
Post-mortem examinations of five of the deceased have been conducted at the Chilaw Hospital, confirming that the deaths were caused by alcohol poisoning. The post-mortem examination of the sixth victim is scheduled to be carried out at the Chilaw Hospital today (08).
Meanwhile, eight other individuals who fell ill after consuming the same illegal alcohol are currently receiving treatment at the Negombo and Peradeniya hospitals.
Following the incident, Wennappuwa Police launched an investigation and initially arrested two suspects. They were produced before the Marawila Magistrate’s Court yesterday (07) and remanded until the January 19.
Further investigations into the incident are being carried out by the Wennappuwa Police.
