Safety arrangements for pilgrims travelling to Sri Pada via the Hatton route have been strengthened following the completion of renovation work on the Mahagiri Damba section, which was damaged by Cyclone Ditva.
The Sri Lanka Army carried out the restoration, fully repairing the damaged stretch and reopening the road to ensure uninterrupted access for devotees during the pilgrimage season.
A new safety fence has been installed along the route to prevent accidents and improve pilgrim safety. The project also received assistance from the Sri Lanka Air Force and Sri Lanka Navy, highlighting a joint effort by the tri-services to support religious activities and public safety.
Religious leaders associated with Sri Pada, including the Sri Pada Sthanadhipati and senior members of the Maha Sangha, oversaw the restoration process to ensure the road was returned to a condition suitable for safe travel.
Venerable Sumana Jyothi Thero, in charge of Sri Pada Uda Maluwa, said the completion of the work will allow pilgrims using the Hatton route to worship at Sri Pada without difficulty, adding that the improved safety measures will be especially beneficial during periods of heavy pilgrim movement.
