The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the National Strategic Action Plan to Combat Trafficking in Persons for the period 2026–2030, reaffirming Sri Lanka’s commitment to preventing and addressing human trafficking.
Sri Lanka is a signatory to and has ratified the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and the Palermo Protocol to Prevent, Suppress, and Punish Trafficking in Persons, especially against Women and Children. In line with these international obligations, the National Task Force on Trafficking in Persons was established in 2010 to coordinate the efforts of institutions involved in the prevention of trafficking.
The previous National Strategic Action Plan, which covered the period 2021–2025, concluded on December 31, 2025. Following a review of its progress, a new action plan for 2026–2030 was formulated with the participation and consensus of all relevant stakeholders.
The new strategy is based on four key pillars: prevention, protection, prosecution, and partnership. The Cabinet approved the proposal submitted by the President in his capacity as Minister of Defence to implement the action plan.
