Special train services for school students have commenced on school days between Nawalapitiya and Hatton, and between Kandy and Wattegama, starting January 5 and 6, 2026. These services mark the first time trains have operated on these sections since the disaster.
On the Wattegama–Kandy route, trains depart Wattegama at 5.45 a.m., arriving in Kandy at 6.30 a.m., with the return journey leaving Kandy at 2.00 p.m. and reaching Wattegama at 2.39 p.m.
On the Hatton–Nawalapitiya route, trains leave Hatton at 5.00 a.m., arriving in Nawalapitiya at 6.29 a.m. The return service departs Nawalapitiya at 2.12 p.m. and reaches Hatton at 3.11 p.m.
Railway officials said these new and resumed services are aimed at improving connectivity, supporting tourism, and easing transportation for schoolchildren.
