The Government of Sri Lanka has expressed deep concern over recent developments in Venezuela, stating that it is closely monitoring the evolving situation.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Colombo highlighted the importance of upholding the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter. These include the prohibition of the use of force, non-intervention in the internal affairs of states, the peaceful settlement of international disputes, and respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations.
Sri Lanka noted that it attaches great importance to the safety and well-being of the people of Venezuela, as well as to the stability of the region. The Government urged all parties involved to prioritise de-escalation and dialogue in order to achieve a peaceful resolution.
At this critical juncture, Sri Lanka also stressed that the United Nations and its relevant organs, including the UN Security Council, should actively engage with the situation and work towards a peaceful outcome. Any such efforts, the statement said, should take into account the safety, well-being and sovereign rights of the Venezuelan people.
