The Sports Misconduct Investigation Unit informed the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today (5) that the second suspect in the case filed against former cricketer Sachithra Senanayake has not yet appeared before the Unit or provided a statement.
The case was taken up before Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga Bodaragama. The Sports Misconduct Investigation Unit stated that the suspect is accused of allegedly inciting two players who participated in the inaugural Premier League cricket tournament to fix matches by making phone calls to them.
Court was informed that the suspect had been ordered to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department on December 25 to give a statement. However, the suspect had failed to appear on that date, despite being informed via email.
The officers further told court that the suspect had sent an email to the Sports Misconduct Investigation Unit requesting two weeks’ time. Accordingly, based on the instructions of the Attorney General, the suspect was granted three weeks to appear.
Nevertheless, the Sports Misconduct Investigation Unit informed the court today that the suspect has still not appeared before the Unit or recorded a statement.
