Motor Transport Commissioner General Kamal Amarasinghe said that 800,000 licence cards have been received for the issuance of driving licences, while 240,000 driving licences have already been printed and distribution has commenced.
He said the Department aims to complete the printing of all driving licences and issue licence cards to all eligible persons by February 28, replacing the temporary driving licences currently in use.
The Commissioner General explained that temporary driving licences had been issued to around 450,000 individuals due to a shortage of licence cards. Of this number, licences for 240,000 persons had been printed by yesterday (03), and the remaining 210,000 licences will be printed and distributed before February 28.
Amarasinghe further noted that, on average, about 60,000 to 80,000 new driving licences are printed each month, adding that with licence cards now being ordered in advance, a similar shortage will not occur again.
