The government has confirmed that the proposed education reforms will be implemented as scheduled, with preparations completed for the upcoming academic year.
Grade 6 students will begin the new curriculum on January 21, while Grade 1 students will start the revised modules from January 29, the Ministry of Education and Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya announced during a special media briefing at the Department of Government Information.
To ensure a smooth transition, programs have been organized to familiarize both students and parents with the new education system. Students will receive guidance on subject selection and adapting to the revised curriculum, while parents are being introduced to the reforms through dedicated awareness programs.
The Prime Minister highlighted that teacher training has been a key focus, with 7,181 “training of trainers” programs conducted, covering approximately 132,580 teachers. This accounts for 93% of the teachers who will be instructing under the new modules.
Infrastructure development has also been prioritized to support the reforms, ensuring that the schools are equipped to implement the new curriculum effectively.
Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya emphasized that the government’s approach aims to strengthen education, support teachers, and prepare students for the evolving academic and technological demands of the future.
