Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organizer and Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa has demanded the resignation of Education Minister Harini Amarasuriya over the controversial Grade 6 English module, stating that the responsibility rests with her rather than any ministry official.
Speaking to journalists, Rajapaksa noted that the head of the National Institute of Education has already resigned over the incident and that the head of the investigation committee was appointed by the Prime Minister. Since the Prime Minister oversees the ministry, he argued, Minister Amarasuriya should step down.
He criticized the module’s printing process, saying that “an outsider cannot print the book.” Rajapaksa also called it “a joke” that the Ministry Secretary filed a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department, emphasizing that decisions regarding subjects or curricula cannot be made by a single individual.
Rajapaksa stressed that both the Minister in charge and the Ministry Secretary are fully aware of the decisions being made, and therefore, accountability lies with Minister Harini Amarasuriya.
