Five people, including two youths and a woman, have lost their lives in a series of road accidents reported from several areas during the past 24 hours, police said.
The fatal accidents occurred yesterday (03) within the Marawila, Meegahatenna, Nochchiyagama, Kesbewa and Beruwala police divisions.
In the Marawila Police Division, a motorcycle travelling from Tisserapura towards Adappa Junction lost control and crashed into a gate post. Both the rider and the pillion rider were injured and admitted to the Marawila Hospital, where the rider later died while being transferred. The deceased was a 28-year-old resident of Marawila.
In the Meegahatenna Police Division, a motorcycle rider suddenly turned right near the 10-house complex on the Pelawatte–Horawala road and collided with another motorcycle travelling in the opposite direction. Both the motorcyclist and a cyclist were seriously injured and admitted to the Meegahatenna Hospital. The cyclist later died after being transferred to the Nagoda Hospital. The deceased was an 84-year-old resident of Maddegama in Meegahatenna.
Meanwhile, in Nochchiyagama, a 52-year-old resident of Thalgaswewa was killed when two motorcycles collided head-on along the Thalgaswewa road.
In Kesbewa, a cab travelling from Horana towards Kesbewa struck a pedestrian crossing the road on the Horana–Kesbewa road. The woman sustained serious injuries and died after being admitted to the Piliyandala Hospital. She was a 52-year-old resident of Polgasowita.
Another fatal accident was reported from Beruwala, where a motorcyclist lost control near the junction leading to St. Anne’s Road, veered off the road and crashed into a wall. The injured rider was admitted to the Beruwala Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The deceased was a 26-year-old resident of Beruwala.
Police are conducting further investigations into the accidents.
