The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhenhong, recently met with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath to discuss possible multi-faceted assistance to Sri Lanka following the impact of Cyclone Ditwah.
Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Ministry said the discussions focused on areas of support that could be extended based on a comprehensive needs assessment, particularly in response to the damage caused by the adverse weather conditions. The proposed assistance is expected to cover humanitarian relief, early recovery measures and other priority sectors identified by Sri Lankan authorities.
During the meeting, Minister Herath expressed Sri Lanka’s deep appreciation for China’s continued support and solidarity, especially during times of crisis. He acknowledged China’s timely assistance in the aftermath of recent natural disasters and reiterated the value Sri Lanka places on its long-standing bilateral relationship with China.
The Minister further reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s consistent support for the One China Policy, in line with United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758. He emphasized that Sri Lanka continues to recognise the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government representing the whole of China.
The meeting underscored the strong diplomatic ties between Sri Lanka and China, as well as their continued cooperation in addressing humanitarian needs and strengthening bilateral relations.
