The government has set an ambitious target of generating US$ 2.5 billion in export income from the coconut sector by 2030, as part of its long-term agricultural and industrial development strategy.

As a key initiative, the “Northern Coconut Triangle” has been established, with plans to cultivate 36,000 acres of new coconut plantations, including 16,000 acres of newly identified lands. Authorities said these measures are expected to yield results in the medium to long term.

In the short term, the government introduced several policy decisions aimed at improving efficiency and reducing local wastage. These include promoting better household-level use of coconuts and related by-products, encouraging alternative food consumption, introducing simple technologies to reduce waste, and allowing exporters to import coconut-based products strictly for re-export purposes.

Officials said these measures helped prevent shortages in the domestic market while safeguarding the growth of the export industry.
