The Port of Colombo has achieved its highest-ever container throughput, handling a total of 829,000 containers in 2025, port officials said, underscoring the port’s growing role as a regional maritime hub.
The Port of Colombo has achieved its highest-ever container throughput, handling a total of 829,000 containers in 2025, port officials said, underscoring the port’s growing role as a regional maritime hub.
The figure represents a 6 per cent increase over 2024, when container handling stood at 770,000. Officials attributed the strong performance to the collective contribution of all container terminals operating at the port, despite challenging global shipping conditions.
Operations at the Sri Lanka Ports Authority–managed Jaya Container Terminal (JCT) and Eastern Container Terminal (ECT), along with the South Asia Gateway Terminals (SAGT) and the Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT), were cited as key drivers of the record throughput.
To mark the milestone, a commemorative event was held at the Eastern Container Terminal with the participation of Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Anura Karunathilaka. Deputy Minister Janitha Ruwan Kodithuwakku, Ministry Secretary W.W.S. Mangala, senior Sri Lanka Ports Authority officials and terminal heads were also present.
