Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have pledged their support to strengthen the national anti-drug campaign “Ratama Ekata”, aimed at eradicating drugs from Sri Lanka.
A special discussion to enhance the campaign was held today (January 2, 2026) at the Ministry of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, under the patronage of Minister Ananda Wijepala.
The meeting was attended by Ravi Seneviratne, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs; Indika Wanninayake, Chairman of the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board (NDDCB); senior officials of the NDDCB; and representatives of several NGOs involved in the rehabilitation of drug addicts.
During the discussion, special attention was focused on strengthening cooperation with NGOs to ensure the success of the “Ratam Ekata” national operation, identifying mechanisms to formally and efficiently utilize NGO contributions, and improving coordination and relationships between relevant institutions.
Minister Ananda Wijepala emphasized that while special operations are ongoing to prevent the importation and trafficking of drugs, it is equally important to go beyond arrests and focus on the rehabilitation and reintegration of drug addicts into society. He highlighted the need to maintain rehabilitation centers operated by the private sector and NGOs, alongside government-run facilities, to ensure a comprehensive rehabilitation process.
Representatives of the participating NGOs expressed their commitment to extending maximum support to further strengthen the “Ratam Ekata” national campaign and contribute effectively to the country’s efforts to eliminate drug abuse.
