Sri Lanka experienced a significant increase in road accident fatalities in 2025 compared to the previous year, according to Assistant Police Superintendent F.U. Wuttler.
Police statistics reveal that in 2024, the country reported 2,287 fatal road accidents, which resulted in 2,388 deaths. However, the situation worsened in 2025, with fatal accidents rising to 2,562 and the number of deaths climbing to 2,710.
This marks an alarming increase of 322 additional fatalities within a single year, highlighting growing concerns over road safety across the island.
Authorities note that factors such as reckless driving, speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and poor adherence to traffic laws continue to contribute significantly to fatal accidents. Police have emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, increased public awareness, and responsible driving behavior to curb the rising death toll.
The Sri Lanka Police have urged motorists and pedestrians alike to prioritize road safety, warning that continued negligence could further escalate the already troubling trend.
