Passengers of Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) buses can now pay fares using electronic cards, following the launch of a new digital payment system today (01.01.2026). The initiative is part of the government’s broader push to introduce innovative digital solutions across public services.
The system was inaugurated at the Makumbura Multimodal Center (MMC) in Kottawa under the patronage of SLTB Chairman Sajeewa Kanakaratne, with guidance from the Ministry of Digital Economy.
The new system allows passengers to pay their fares using electronic cards without any extra charges, ensuring a smooth and convenient journey while reducing the need for cash handling.
The government plans to expand and improve the card system based on feedback during the pilot phase. Initially, electronic card payments will be available on key routes, including Makumbura-Galle and Makumbura-Embilipitiya.
Officials said the digital payment system aims to enhance efficiency and convenience for daily commuters while supporting the government’s vision of a cashless, technology-driven public transport network.
