A Sub-Inspector of Police attached to the Kinniya Police Station was arrested yesterday on charges of bribery following a complaint made by a resident of the Kinniya area.
According to investigations, the police officer is alleged to have demanded a bribe of Rs. 10,000 in connection with a complaint regarding an assault on the complainant. The officer had reportedly sought the payment to arrest two suspects and to take legal action against the remaining individuals involved, obtaining the money through an intermediary.
The arrest was carried out by officers of the Commission for the Investigation of Bribery or Corruption at the Kinniya Police Station.
The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Trincomalee Magistrate’s Court for further proceedings.
