A Sri Lankan passenger was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (Katunayake) on December 30 while attempting to illegally bring in a consignment of mobile phones, jewellery and laptops worth around Rs. 10 million.
Airport Police said the suspect was arrested following an intelligence tip-off as he was exiting the airport premises. The suspect is a 35-year-old businessman residing in Wellampitiya, Colombo.
He had arrived from Dubai at around 6.00 a.m. on SriLankan Airlines flight UL-226. During a search of his luggage, police officers found the latest Apple mobile phones, laptop computers, Apple Mac WiFi devices, and a large stock of gold jewellery, including necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings and pendants, wrapped in white paper.
Further investigations are being carried out by Airport Police.
