Lecturers at all state universities across the country began a strike from yesterday (30), citing concerns over recent decisions by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Secretary of the Federation of University Lecturers’ Associations (FUTA), Senior Lecturer Charudatta Ilangasinghe, said the strike was launched in protest against the temporary suspension of appointments of new Deans and Heads of Departments. He said these appointments were halted by the UGC ahead of the submission of the proposed University Bill.

Meanwhile, President of the Education Professionals’ Association, Venerable Ulapane Sumangala Thero, accused the government of attempting to promote homosexuality under the guise of introducing new education reforms.

He made these remarks while speaking at a press conference held in Colombo yesterday to raise public awareness on issues related to the proposed education reforms.
