The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said that two generators at the Lakvijaya Coal-fired Power Plant in Norochcholai are currently out of service due to maintenance and technical repairs.
According to a CEB spokesperson, the shutdown of the two generators has resulted in a loss of 600 megawatts of electricity capacity to the national grid. At present, only one generator at the power plant remains operational, contributing approximately 300 megawatts of electricity.
The spokesperson explained that one generator was taken offline on November 3 for routine maintenance, while the second generator was shut down on December 20 following the detection of a technical fault. Repair work on both units is currently underway.
The CEB stated that both generators are expected to be restored and reconnected to the national grid during the first week of January.
Despite the reduced output from the Norochcholai Power Plant, the CEB assured the public that there has been no disruption to daily electricity supply. The shortfall is being managed through increased hydroelectric power generation, ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply across the country.
