Police have intensified operations against drunk and drug-impaired drivers following the importation of 75,000 breathalyser test tubes on December 24, Deputy Inspector General of Police W. G. J. Senadheera said.
He explained that enforcement had previously been affected due to a shortage of testing equipment, but with new supplies now available, police operations have been strengthened islandwide. As a result, the number of cases filed against drunk drivers has increased significantly in recent weeks, with many offenders arrested and subjected to heavy fines and licence suspensions.
A special gazette issued in September 2025 has also introduced new procedures to detect drug use among drivers. Under these guidelines, suspected drivers are referred to a forensic medical officer based on physical signs such as posture, eye movement, balance, body features and behaviour.
