Police will take action against drunk and reckless drivers under the Criminal Act in addition to the Traffic Act, following directives issued by the Inspector General of Police, DIG W. G. J. Senadheera announced.
He said drivers who operate vehicles under the influence of drugs or alcohol pose a serious threat to public safety, often driving at high speeds and knowingly endangering others.
“From now on, such offenders will not be treated as ordinary traffic violators. They will face criminal charges in addition to penalties under traffic laws,” DIG Senadheera said, warning that tougher legal consequences await those who continue to drive irresponsibly.
