Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply Susil Ranasinghe said that arrangements are being made to construct housing complexes for families whose homes were destroyed or rendered uninhabitable by Cyclone Ditwah.
Addressing a media briefing held at the Ministry today (22), the Minister said alternative lands have already been identified through District Secretaries for the resettlement programme. He noted that more than 6,000 houses have been completely destroyed, while over 100,000 houses have been partially damaged. In addition, several areas have been declared unsafe for continued habitation.
Minister Ranasinghe said the resettlement process will be carried out in phases, with housing complexes planned for most of the identified locations. He added that the Presidential Secretariat is involved in arranging the required financial support, while the Ministry is preparing basic housing plans and engaging with relevant officials and craftsmen.
The Minister expressed confidence that the affected families will be able to rebuild their lives within a short period of time, while those living in high-risk areas will be relocated to safer locations to prevent similar disasters in the future.
