Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has informed representatives of UNICEF that the government will prioritize relocating schools affected by landslides to safer locations, stressing that it would be dangerous to reopen such schools in their current sites.

The Prime Minister made these remarks during a meeting held with a group of UNICEF representatives at the Prime Minister’s Office yesterday, where discussions focused on the restoration and continuity of education in schools affected by recent disasters.

Meanwhile, following reports of a potential landslide risk at Mahamaya Balika Vidyalaya in Kandy, officers from the Kandy District of the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) carried out an inspection of the premises today (21).

The NBRO subsequently concluded that the incident involved the collapse of a soil layer and not a landslide, alleviating immediate concerns over landslide risk at the school.
