Sri Lanka Police have launched an investigation following complaints of threats and assaults against taxi drivers operating in the Ella tourist zone, police said.
According to the Police Media Division, drivers providing services through ride-hailing platforms such as PickMe and Uber have been threatened and assaulted by other taxi drivers while entering the Ella tourist area. The incidents have been reported to the Ella Police Station, prompting an official investigation.
Meanwhile, a video circulating on social media shows two police officers instructing drivers on operating vehicles in the area. Police said a complaint regarding the conduct of the officers was received on December 19, following which an investigation was carried out under the supervision of senior police officials.
As a result of the inquiry, the two police officers concerned have been transferred with immediate effect, and further investigations are ongoing.
Separately, police said another investigation was initiated on December 21 after a complaint was received that a driver had attempted to assault a vehicle and caused damage to it in the Ella area. Based on information revealed during the investigation, two suspects were arrested in connection with attempted assault and property damage.
The suspects are due to be produced before the Badulla Magistrate’s Court today (December 22).
Police reiterated that strict legal action will be taken against anyone who obstructs legitimate transport services or engages in violence, particularly in tourist areas.
