Three teams of foreign expert geologists have arrived in Sri Lanka to study mountain slopes that have been damaged and developed cracks in areas affected by severe landslides, a senior official of the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) said.
The teams, comprising experts from Italy, France and China, have begun preliminary studies using drone technology to identify damaged and cracked areas that could serve as early warning signs of potential landslides in disaster-affected regions.
The official said the studies are being carried out with the assistance of local experts, including specialists from the NBRO. The assessments will also examine the feasibility of applying engineering solutions to reduce damage to mountain slopes that are highly prone to erosion and cracking.
As part of the process, landslide-affected areas and locations facing potential threats will be photographed using drones, with the captured images to be analyzed for detailed studies.
In addition to the foreign expert assessments, several teams of local geologists and engineers are continuing their own research activities in vulnerable regions.
Foreign experts are expected to closely monitor landslide-affected and high-risk areas in the Kandy, Matale, Badulla, Nuwara Eliya and Kurunegala districts, as well as in the Sabaragamuwa Province, where serious landslides have been reported.
