The Department of Irrigation has extended its flood warning for low-lying areas along the Mahaweli Ganga basin by an additional 24 hours, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance. The alert will remain in effect until 5.30 p.m. on December 20, 2025.

The warning was initially issued on December 18 due to heavy rainfall in the Mahaweli catchment areas and the controlled release of water from upstream reservoirs, which raised the risk of minor flooding.

Authorities have specifically advised residents in the Kinniya, Muttur, Kantale, Seruvila, Welikanda, Lankapura, Thamankaduwa, and Dimbulagala divisions to take precautions and stay alert as water levels in rivers and tributaries remain elevated.

The department continues to monitor the situation closely and has urged local communities to follow official updates to ensure safety.
