UNESCO Deputy Secretary General Nalaka Ratnayake said the rockfall occurred outside the main Sigiriya Rock and is believed to have been triggered by adverse weather conditions. He stressed that the collapse does not pose a threat to the integrity or global standing of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress.
The Central Cultural Fund (CCF) has officially informed UNESCO of the incident, noting that the collapse took place near the outer entrance to the site. A detailed assessment of the damage is currently being prepared and is expected to be submitted in the coming days.
Ratnayake said the findings of the assessment report will determine whether any additional conservation or safety measures are required to ensure the long-term protection of the site.
Authorities have assured visitors that monitoring is ongoing and that necessary steps will be taken to safeguard both the historic monument and public safety.
