A proposal has been submitted to the Speaker of Parliament calling for the formation of a Parliamentary Select Committee to review the government’s handling of Cyclone Ditwah.
The proposal, signed by 25 Opposition MPs including Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, requests the establishment of a committee to investigate the alleged lack of preparedness and the failure to minimize damage caused by the cyclone. It also aims to examine the effectiveness of preventive and mitigation measures implemented before the disaster.
In their submission, the MPs highlighted that the full extent of loss of life, property damage, and public impact caused by Cyclone Ditwah—considered one of Sri Lanka’s worst natural disasters—has yet to be fully assessed.
The MPs have urged the Speaker to appoint the Select Committee to conduct a comprehensive inquiry and produce a report on the alleged shortcomings in disaster preparedness and response.
