Jeevan Thondaman to resign as CWC General Secretary ?

The General Secretary of the Ceylon Workers' Congress (CWC) and Nuwara Eliya District MP, Jeevan Thondaman, has reportedly decided to resign from his post and has asked several vice-chairmen of the party to convene the party’s National Council for this purpose.

The decision comes following a disagreement with the current CWC chairman, Senthil Thondaman, after the defeat of the 2026 budget proposal of the Agarapatana Pradeshiya Sabha, where the CWC holds the chairman position. A telephone argument between Jeevan Thondaman and SSenthil Thondaman reportedly prompted his decision to step down.

A senior vice-chairman of the CWC said that Jeevan Thondaman, who also serves as a party vice president, has requested that the party’s municipal councilors in Talawakele Lidula, Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council, Haguranketha, Walapane, and Kotmale withdraw their support for the government.

Although Jeevan Thondaman informed party officials via telephone to convene the National Council, a senior vice-chairman said that the Council would only be convened once a formal written request is submitted.
