Expectant and new mothers in Sri Lanka are receiving targeted support through a one-time LKR 5,000 nutrition allowance, as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to safeguard maternal and child well-being.
The initiative, launched under the National Secretariat for Early Childhood Development, aims to assist mothers registered at maternal clinics on or before 30 November 2025, as well as lactating mothers with infants under four months of age. The programme comes in response to the current disaster situation and the upcoming festive season, providing timely financial relief for families.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony held this morning at the Wellawatte Medical Officer of Health Office, Women and Child Affairs Minister Saroja Savithri Paulraj emphasized the government’s commitment to investing in mothers and children, even amid challenging circumstances. She also highlighted the importance of maternal happiness and mental health, noting that they directly influence the brain development and future personality of unborn children.
The event was attended by Ministry Secretary Tharangani Wickramasinghe, directors and officers of the National Secretariat for Early Childhood Development, medical officers and officials from the Ministry of Health, alongside expectant mothers benefiting from the programme.
