Authorities have urged the public and media organizations to refrain from sharing photographs, video footage or personal details of children affected by the ongoing disaster situation.
In a statement, officials warned that the circulation of such material on social media and mainstream media platforms could seriously compromise the identity and privacy of affected children. They noted that these images and details could be exploited by traffickers and other criminal elements, placing vulnerable children at further risk.
The statement further highlighted that legal action will be taken against individuals who misuse information relating to disaster-affected children for activities such as child exploitation and trafficking.
Members of the public who have information regarding children affected by disasters, suspected post-disaster trafficking incidents, or individuals involved in such crimes are requested to inform the 1929 Child Helpline Service or contact the Child Rights Promotion Officer or Child Protection Officer attached to the nearest Divisional Secretariat.
Authorities called on the public to exercise compassion responsibly, stressing that the safety, dignity and well-being of disaster-affected children must be safeguarded at all times.
