Sri Lanka Police have warned of attempts by unidentified individuals to exploit children who have become vulnerable following Cyclone ‘Ditwah’, particularly through social media platforms.
Police said certain individuals are posting phone numbers on social media, requesting information about children who have lost their parents in the disaster, claiming they wish to provide care and secure the children’s future. Authorities noted a growing trend of such inquiries made by unknown persons seeking details of vulnerable children online.
According to police, these individuals may later approach the children or their relatives under the pretext of offering relief assistance and attempt to act as guardians, while allegedly engaging the children in illegal activities.
Police cautioned that such children face serious risks, including sexual abuse, child abuse, forced labour and other forms of exploitation.
Authorities stressed that anyone with a genuine intention of taking a child into custody, providing care or proceeding with adoption must do so strictly through lawful procedures. Such matters should be initiated through the relevant District Court in accordance with Sri Lanka’s legal framework.
The public has been urged not to share any information about vulnerable children with unknown individuals who request details via social media or publish contact numbers online.
Police further requested that any concerns or requests for assistance regarding children affected by the cyclone be reported to the National Child Protection Authority or the Bureau for the Investigation of Abuse of Children and Women.
