Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya emphasized that education must not become a burden for children during the recovery period following disasters. She highlighted that priority should be given to protecting students’ psychosocial well-being to foster a supportive school environment.
The Prime Minister made these remarks during a discussion with education authorities of the Nuwara Eliya District, focused on measures to restore educational activities and facilitate the reopening of schools after the recent disaster situation.
She also stressed that teachers and students who have faced hardships should be allowed flexibility in wearing comfortable attire, ensuring that the return to school is sensitive to their experiences.
During the meeting, district education officials reported that despite numerous challenges, education reforms are progressing steadily, with 51 percent of teacher training activities in the Nuwara Eliya District already completed. The Prime Minister urged all stakeholders to work collectively to rebuild the education system stronger than before.
The discussion was attended by Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Madhura Seneviratne; Chairman of the District Coordinating Committee and MP Manjula Suraweera Arachchi; MPs Kalai Chelvi and Anushka Tilakaratne; Nuwara Eliya District Secretary Thushari Tennakoon, and several government officials.
