The Rebuilding Sri Lanka Fund, established by the government to provide relief to people affected by recent disasters, has received more than Rs. 3,421 million to date, according to Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development.
Dr. Suriyapperuma said that contributions to the fund have come from local businessmen, Sri Lankans living abroad, and foreign institutions. He noted that the total amount received so far stands at approximately Rs. 3.4 billion, which is equivalent to over US$11 million.
He further said that foreign currency contributions amount to approximately US$4.1 million.
Speaking further, Dr. Suriyapperuma said that financial assistance has been received from around 40 countries, with the largest contributions coming from the United States and other North American countries. Significant donations have also been made by Sri Lankans residing in Australia, as well as local businessmen and supporters of Sri Lanka.
He added that the third-largest share of contributions has come from the United Kingdom, followed by donations from Germany, Italy, the Maldives, Saudi Arabia, France, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates.
Dr. Suriyapperuma also noted that several Sri Lankan business institutions have each contributed more than Rs. 100 million, while four major contributions ranging between Rs. 20 million and Rs. 100 million have been made by members of the business community and the public.
