The Attorney General has informed the Supreme Court that the Cabinet has decided to permit the recruitment of women for all positions within the Sri Lanka Railway Service.

The announcement was made by the Senior State Counsel representing the Attorney General during the hearing of a fundamental rights petition filed by two women. The petition challenged a previous Gazette notification that barred women from applying for Station Master positions.

According to the Senior State Counsel, the government has now taken steps to remove these restrictions, opening the way for women to apply for any post in the Railway Department. The Supreme Court took note of the Cabinet’s decision during the proceedings
