The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has urged the public to avoid trips and picnics as extreme weather conditions continue to pose a serious threat across several districts.
Senior Geologist Dr. Wasantha Senadheera said that landslide evacuation red notices issued to 33 Divisional Secretariat (DS) Divisions in four districts have been extended due to ongoing risks.
“In the current disaster situation, people should avoid unnecessary travel and stay in safe places,” he said, warning that venturing out for leisure activities could be dangerous.
Dr. Senadheera noted that the NBRO has even received inquiries from individuals asking if it is safe to go on weekend outings, despite the unstable conditions.
The extended warnings follow heavy rainfall exceeding 75mm in parts of the Badulla and Kandy districts in recent days. Landslides were also reported in Meegahakivula and Demodara yesterday (11).
From November 20 to today (12), the NBRO has received 2,716 requests to inspect potentially hazardous locations, completing 589 inspections so far.
Given the prevailing weather patterns, Stage 2 landslide warnings will continue for 38 DS Divisions in five districts, while Stage 1 advisories—urging residents to remain vigilant—will remain in effect for 17 DS Divisions in three districts.
Dr. Senadheera advised residents to stay alert, as warnings may change depending on future rainfall trends.
